Abstract
Raznolikost porodice Svinje (Suidae) obuhvaća pripadnike triju potporodica, šest rodova i 19 vrsta. Podrijetlo ove porodice seže u geološka doba oligocen, prije 20 mil. godina. Rani predak domaće svinje (Sus scrofa) pojavio se u jugoistočnoj Aziji prije 5,3-3,5 mil. godina. Čovjek je udomaćio svinju prije oko 10.000 godina, a danas na svijetu ima 739 raznih pasmina svinja. Opisani su značajniji predstavnici ove porodice: babirusa, afrička bradavičasta svinja, divlja svinja i domaća svinja s najpoznatijim tradicionalnim i komercijalnim pasminama u Hrvatskoj.
Abstract (english)
The diversity of the Pigs family (Suidae) comprises members of three subfamilies, six genera and 19 species. The origin of this family dates back from the Oligocene geological epoch, 20 million years ago. The early ancestor of domestic pig (Sus scrofa) occurred in Southeast Asia, 5.3-3.5 million years ago. The humans domesticated pigs about 10,000 years ago, and today there are 739 different pig breeds. Some important representatives of this family were described: Hairy Babirusa. Common Warthog, Wild Boar and Domestic Pig with well-known traditional and commercial breeds in Croatia.
