Abstract (english) | In science, legislative and consumers circles attention is often paid to the welfare of farm animals including dairy cows. In order to evaluate the welfare on a farm level assessment systems have been developed, and one of them is the Austrian system for assessing welfare with regard to housing conditions titled Animal Needs Index ANI 35L/2000. Version for cattle was used in this research as a tool for assessing the Animal Needs Index of dairy cows on a modern farm Grube d.o.o. Potnjani. The system is based on the scoring of a large number of factors that affect the welfare of cattle and they are classified in five main categories namely Locomotion, Social interaction, Flooring, Light and Air and Stockmanship. Scoring is based on a farm research which includes measurements, calculations, visual assessments, inspection of documents and consultations with officials on the farm, such as veterinary technicians, all according to the tables for the evaluation and the methods listed by Bartussek et al. (2000). Eight stables was analysed and specific assessement was made for each stable. The sum score of all five categories representing the overall ANI score for each stable, and based on this, the level of welfare is classified within one of the six classes. Overall ANI score of entire farm represents the average score of all analyzed stables, and based on this, the level of welfare is also classified within one of six classes, which represents the final score of welfare, and overall ANI score of farm Grube d.o.o. Potnjani was ranked that farm in the top category with very suitable welfare with respect to the housing system. In Croatia, there is no formal system for assessing the welfare of cattle, and its eventual establishment will have positive impact on whole cattle production in Croatia. ANI 35L/2000 system proved to be an excellent tool for assessing welfare on the farm level and it is characterized by easy repeatability. Therefore, this system can be used as a very good basis for the establishment of an official national welfare assessment system, in which development is also necessary to include the producers and consumers of milk |
