The German Wirehaired Pointer is a widespread dog breed throughout Europe. This breed traces its roots back to the beginning of the 20th century when it was created by crossing several breeds. Mentioned crossbreeding resulted in a new breed which inherited the best features from its ancestors. The German Wirehaired Pointer is an intelligent, noble-looking dog with slightly longer, sharp, and dense hair. These dogs are very powerful, versatile hunting dogs with a strong hunting instinct. German Wirehaired Pointer is also a working type of dog which can do well in all disciplines with proper training. This is why this breed has been bred for generations for hunting purposes. The breed is extremely suitable for hunting all feathered and hairy small and large game, like quail, ducks, pheasants, foxes and jackals. The German Wirehaired Pointer breed requires moderate to high levels of exercise that will develop their minds and satisfy their natural instincts. Training the German Wirehaired Pointer should be calm and consistent and requires constant execution. According to the FCI classification, it belongs to the group 7, Continental pointing dog breeds. This paper describes the historical origin of the German Wirehaired Pointer breed and its characteristics. Based on analysed characteristics the paper presents the method of maintaining this breed, as well as its useful abilities. At the end of the paper, the method of training the German Wirehaired Pointer breed is described.
