The aim of this work is to show how grazing affects the productivity of dairy cows, which make up an important part of the cattle industry and livestock sector in Croatia. Compilation of literature sources showed that grazing can enable a relatively high milk yield of dairy cows, up to close to 30 kg of milk per day per cow in the period of the maximum lactation curve, but that more often results of around 20 kg of milk per day can be found. The realization of milk production potential is mostly influenced by the initial herbage mass in the pasture, the residual herbage mass, the quality or nutritional value of the herbage mass in the pasture and the offered daily grazing ration, and even the time of year when grazing is done. Daily milk yield during summer is usually below average for the grazing season, while during spring it is above average. Grazing management should be such that the cattle are offered quality pasture and an adequate daily herbage ration, and that the grassland is provided with a sufficiently long period of rest and regeneration after defoliation, as well as to limit the period of occupation of the allocated pasture area. Grazing can be a very interesting option in conditions of rising input prices and the need to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, reduce pesticide emissions and reduce machine operating costs. Increasing the area of temporary pastures on arable land would improve the landscape, improve biodiversity in the agroecosystem and recover the degraded oil structure and organic matter content.
