The hunting ground V/113 „Šaulovec“ is s lowland type of hunting grounds in the Republic of Croatia and is located in the Varaždin County. It is intended for the natural breeding of normally developed, healthy, and resilient wildlife with medium to high trophy value. Additionally, the hunting ground is designated for the protection of wildlife and animal species residing in it or passing through it, as well as for the utilization of wildlife to achieve economic benefits. Furthermore, it serves the purpose of breeding trophy wildlife for sale and introducing artificially bred wildlife to enhance economic utilization. According to the hunting management basis, the primary objective is to breed productive wildlife populations considering habitat conditions, a certain level of hunting management intensity, and tolerance for damages caused by wildlife to forest and agricultural areas. This function goes beyond economic objectives and also aims to protect and preserve the biological and ecological balance of natural wildlife habitats while maintaining genetic diversity of native species. The roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) is distributed throughout Croatia in hunting grounds where it finds essential living conditions. Bonification classes are used to determine the classification of the hunting ground based on the number of points assigned according to fundamental factors necessary for wildlife to live and reproduce. The analysis of the current management of roe deer and the assessment of trophy value indicate a worrying downward trend. This can be attributed to the lack of selective and breeding hunting practices resulting from issues within the hunting society. Insufficient education and leadership within the hunting society can lead to a lack of understanding of the principles of selective hunting and sustainable management. Through hunter training and education of leaders within hunting societies, it is possible to ensure that hunting practices support the sustainability of wildlife populations and trophy values. In conclusion, sustainable wildlife management not only contributes to nature conservation but also provides the foundation for the long-term sustainability of hunting and the preservation of wildlife for future generations.
