Abstract
Deve se svrstavaju u porodicu Camelidae, koja se prvi put pojavila u Sjevernoj Americi prije 40 milijuna godina. Sjevernoamerička deva izumrla je prije 10.000 godina. Živuće južnoameričke deve zastupljene su s vrstama: ljama (Lama glama), gvanako (L. guanicoe), vikunja (Vicugna vicugna) i alpaka (V. pacos). Arapska deva ili dromedar (Camelus dromedarius) ima jednu leđnu grbu, dok pripitomljena baktrijska deva (C. bactrianus) i divlja baktrijska deva (C. ferus) imaju po dvije grbe. Ovi "pustinjski brodovi" dugo su cijenjeni kao tovarne ili sedlarne životinje, a iskorištavaju se i zbog mlijeka, mesa, vune i kože. Dromedar je bio pripitomljen oko 3.000-2.000 godina pr. Kr. u Arabiji, baktrijska deva 4.000 godina pr. Kr. u stepama središnje Azije. Većina od današnjih 13 milijuna pripitomljenih dromedara i oko 97 pripitomljenih pasmina nalazi se u Indiji i na Rogu Afrike. Oko milijun pripitomljenih baktrijskih deva živi od Bliskog istoka do Kine i Mongolije. Međunarodna unija za očuvanje prirode (IUCN) klasificirala je divlju baktrijsku devu kao kritično ugroženu vrstu od 2002. godine. Danas najveća populacija od približno 650 odraslih životinji živi u pustinji Gobi.
Abstract (english)
Camels belong to the Camelidae family, which first appeared in North America 40 million years ago. The North American camel became extinct 10,000 years ago. Living South American nines are represented by llama (Lama glama), guanaco (L. guanicoe), vicuña (Vicugna vicugna) and alpaca (V. pacos). The Arabian camel or dromedary (Camelus dromedarius) has one dorsal hump, while the domesticated Bactrian camel (C. bactrianus) and wild Bactrian camel (C. ferus) have two humps. These "desert ships" have long been valued as pack or saddle animals, and are also exploited for milk, meat, wool and hides. The dromedary was domesticated around 3000-2000 BC in Arabia, the Bactrian camel 4000 BC in the steppes of Central Asia. Most of today's 13 million domesticated dromedaries and ca. 97 domesticated breeds are found in India and the Horn of Africa. About one million domesticated Bactrian camels live from the Middle East to China and Mongolia. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified the wild Bactrian camel as a critically endangered species since 2002. The largest population today, of approximately 650 adult animals, lives in the Gobi Desert.
