The aim of this study was to show the established system of production of feeds for feeding cattle on the family farm Ljiljana Čunko from Veliki Rastovac and give a critical review of, and proposals to improve the existing system of fodder production in the service of feeding cattle. Field research was conducted through multiple dates on the production areas of that farm, economic yards, manufacturing facilities (stables) and the warehouses, inspect the books and through the methods of interviews with the leader of economy and workers on the farm. For purposes of discussion, there was studied the literature on the production and use of feed for cattle. All collected data were subjected to analysis and synthesis and as such are structured in this paper. Yields of fodder plants per unit area in the studied farm were relatively low compared with the yields that are achieved in eastern Croatia. The survey found that yields of forage crops, depending on the plot, are restricted by various adverse soil conditions: soil acidity, soil saturation with water during the first half of spring, light mechanical composition and heavy mechanical composition of soil. The average daily gain of beef cattle in the first phase of the fattening (6-12 mo.) was relatively high (1.3 kg / day), while in the second phase of the fattening (12-24 mo.) was relatively low (0.9 kg / day). Applied nutrition was in accordance with the standards of the profession, provided that the quality of hay was in line with the reference values, what in the work was not analyzed. Given the relatively low growth rate in the second phase of fattening, it is certain that the hay that was used in this phase of fattening, was of lower quality, ie. mown in later developmental stages of alfalfa and meadow grasses. The paper presents proposals to improve the entire system of production of feed and feeding, and which relate to: amelioration of chemical and physical properties of the soil, soil fertilization, mowing terms alfalfa and grasses, and the introduction of grazing.
