Machines, devices and tools used for agricultural tillage are exposed to various forms of wear during exploitation. The most significant part of the overall forms of wear is the abrasive wear of the material by soil particles, and tools whose working parts are in direct contact with the soil during operation are most exposed to it - plows, subsoilers, disc harrows, harrows, cultivators, etc. The negative effects of said wear are changes in the shape and dimensions of the tool, and the consequences of the resulting changes are a weaker functionality of the tool in work (smaller depth and width of plowing, etc.), higher processing costs and a decrease in the yield of agricultural crops, i.e., ultimately, an increase in processing costs and a decrease in the profitability of agricultural production. In order to reduce and/or avoid the negative effects of abrasive wear of tillage tools, various protection measures are applied to the working surfaces that are most exposed to wear. This paper deals with the most important measure of such protection – the application of hard coatings, obtained by different technological procedures, in the protection against wear of working parts of tillage tools. The laboratory research (wear test) analyzed the properties of selected representatives of hard coatings, achieved by different technological procedures – thermal (quenched samples), thermal-chemical (borided samples) and procedures of coating the base material with another material (cladding). Based on the obtained research results, it was confirmed that all types of tested hard coatings can be used to protect tillage tools from abrasive wear. It was also established that the effectiveness of the protection of such coatings increases with the increase in tool speed.
