Croatia has a huge number of sheeps. From the Croatian agriculture agency, in the 2006 is recorded 653 119 sheeps. Every year after the sheep shorn, have problem where with wool. For many years, there is a small number of wool' buyers. The wool is nonflammable. So, farmers have only one choice: throw the wool from the land to nature. It is not rarity that we can see discarded wool near wood, on the meadows, by the see. Farmers often burying it in the ground, but it is not good for environment. The wool emits compounds that poisoning the groundwater. Croatia has a huge problems with wool. The wool is used for many purposes in the world, not only in the textile industry as we're using it. The wool is a big thermal insulator, both for clothes, as well as for other things made from it. The huge problem is also with wool' washing because it needs a lot of water and solvent which after washing go into nature and polluting the environment. Innovator Damir Remenar reached this issues and found the solution. So, he designed a machine that washes wool with a clean water. The ecological sludge remains after washing that can be used as a compost. The machine uses much less of water which is clean, too. The machine presses wool after washing in order to gain an building insulation material for coating houses, because, as we said, the wool is the best thermal insulator. Also, the wool can be pelleted and with that you can get a compost for gardens. After washing, the wool can be felted in order to gain highly appreciating clothing from felted wool. Resourceful people from Brač have created workshops and courses for the treatment and processing of the wool and creating a souvenirs and artworks in order to reduce unemployment and to solve a big wool problem. All these new ways for exploitation and disposal of wool contribute to sustainable local development.
