The study aimed at determining the impact of reflective mulch foil to pomological characteristics and internal quality of the fruit apple cultivars Gala Must was conducted in 2015 in the apple orchard of Agricultural Centre Ltd. in Valpovo (Eastern Croatia). Variety was grafted on M9 rootstock, with spindle training system and density set 0.9 x 3.2 m, or 3472 plants per hectare. Treatments included the trees beneath which was set reflective foil, and control treatment with regular inter-row cultivation. The treatment was set 20 days before the expected technological harvest. The dispersion of light within the canopy on the first and third string was significantly higher in the treatment with foil on both sides of the row. Measurements indicate a greater intensity of light in the morning on the east side, and in the evening on the west side which is correlated with stretching of the row direction and path of the sun. The fruits under the reflective foil in all harvest periods and all row direction were darker and more red and less yellow, according to the CIE L * a * b * system (more saturated with color); lower L * and b *. Treatment with foil resulted in a significantly greater height of fruits, on average, for each row direction and all harvest periods. In the first harvest period foil treatment resulted in a significantly larger diameter and starch-iodine index, while in the third harvest time Brix content was significant, on average, for both row sides. The east side of the row resulted in significantly greater height of the fruit and starch-iodine index on average for all three periods of harvest. Anthocyanin contents in the foil treatment were significantly higher on average for both rows and all harvest periods. Vitamin C and anthocyanin concentrations were the most significant in the third harvest period, and phenols in the first harvest period, with average for all row sides and all harvest periods. Obtained research results suggest great potential of reflective foil in achieving or increasing the additional color and internal quality of the fruit. The use of these additional pomotechnical measures is a very good solution for overcoming the adverse climatic trends during ripening of apples.
